The Early Years Curriculum

Our Reception class at Highters Heath Community School are taught using the statutory guidance set out in the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) Statutory Framework.

The EYFS sets the standards that all early years providers must meet to ensure that children learn and develop well and are kept healthy and safe. It promotes teaching and learning to ensure children’s ‘school readiness’ and gives children the broad range of knowledge and skills that provide the right foundation for good future progress through school and life.

The EYFS Statutory Framework document can be viewed using the following link: http://www.foundationyears.org.uk/eyfs-statutory-framework/

The Early Years Profile

The EYFS profile summarises and describes children’s attainment at the end of the EYFS. It is based on ongoing observation and assessment in the 3 prime and 4 specific areas of learning, and the 3 learning characteristics.

A completed profile consists of 20 items of information: the attainment of each child assessed in relation to the 17 early learning goal (ELG) descriptors, together with a short narrative describing the child’s three learning characteristics.

This handbook provides exemplification to enable effective moderation of judgements so that EYFS profile outcomes are accurate and consistent across all settings.

The handbook can be viewed using the link below:

The Development Matters Guidance

As a school we use this non-statutory guidance to support practitioners in implementing the statutory requirements of the Early Years Foundation Stage.

What is it like in EYFS at Highters Heath Community School?

At Highters Heath Community School we have one Reception class, the class size is typically 30 children. This class has a class teacher and a teaching assistant.

The Reception classroom is big, colourful and exciting for our children to learn in! Just outside of the classroom we have a cloakroom area and also easy access to toilets. The classroom has a carpeted teaching area and several other areas throughout the classroom, these include: a writing area, phonics area, maths area, creative area, messy area (water and sand), exploration areas, construction area, home corner, fine motor areas, a challenge area, a small world and a class library/reading area. Children will access a full range of activities in their classrooms including dough, paint, books, blocks and construction, games, role play, small world play, as well as more subject specific resources.

Outside, children have access to a climbing frame, wheeled toys, agility tracks, large scale construction. There is a large covered area and we have waterproof suits and welly boots available for the wettest days. The children also have access to a second, more forest school based, outdoor area which we call “the quad”, this area has grass, trees, a pond, a sheltered outdoor construction area and places to grow fruit!

Children in Reception will use the school halls for assemblies and lunchtime, the KS1 playground for playtime and lunchtimes and may also visit the computer suite or school library. We use the school grounds for lessons regularly. Whenever possible we like to take children out in the local area. Visits further afield are arranged when they support the curriculum content.

Children in Reception attend school from 8:55am to 3.15 Monday to Friday. A typical day will feature a mix of whole class teaching input, adult directed tasks and child initiated work. We teach phonics daily and provide access to the outdoor area as often as practical.
